Stop Recycling Plastic!
The best way to keep plastic out of the ocean is to buy less of it.
Since posting this video, I have been asked about several of the products we use to avoid putting plastic into the waste stream. When I first looked into this, it was shocking to learn how much plastic ends up in the ocean. We’ve all been told to recycle plastic to keep it out of the environment. However, much of the plastic we dutifully recycle is sent overseas to be recycled. But when too much plastic is sent, it is often dumped into the ocean. As a result, my wife and I made a commitment to avoid products packed in plastic wherever possible.
In the video I didn’t promote any particular product, but I’ve been asked repeatedly about which products we use. Here are several of the products we use that don’t have plastic packaging. (As a side benefit, these products are a lot “cleaner” too, with fewer harmful chemicals.)
The tapered base of this tumbler makes it a great fit for smaller cup holders.
Almost completely plastic free, this dish soap works really well and comes in a paper carton. Get rid of those big plastic bottles!
Another great way to reduce your use of plastic is the switch to a safety razor. You will not only eliminate the plastic from razor heads and their packaging, but you will save a lot of money on the long run as safety blades are as little as $.15 each.
This is a very high-quality razor with adjustable plates so you can fine tune it to your saving needs. Safety razors are not all alike. Make sure you pick one that suits you.
*A recent news story shows how a reporter put an Air Tag in with his plastic that was placed in a recycle bin – that we are forced to pay for in California – only to see that the material intended for recycling ended up in the same dump as the regular trash. Watch the CBS report HERE
